Information on 2026 Competitions

This year our schools have two trips planned for two different competitions. The first trip is in August and is organized by our Markham Head School/Shaolin Luohan Temple. The second is in October and is organized by our Downtown School/Shaolin Team Canada.

Please let me know if you are interested in attending either, as we will start working towards that goal right away!

Shaolin Luohan Temple
Hong Kong August 12-16

Students/families book their own flights/travel. The team has organized a group discount at a local hotel 750RMB/double occupancy or 1000RMB/triple occupancy (+13% tax/fees), or you can arrange your own accommodations. The key dates are August 12-16, with the actual competition on August 15, and you are free to arrange your own travel plans after the trip (many choose to visit family locally, or travel to China, Taiwan, Korea etc). Total cost will be determined by what you arrange and whether you will book any trips afterwards. The competitors' fees will be subsidized by the sponsors.

Shaolin Team Canada
China October 12-22

The team has arranged a group discount on flights and rooms. The standard timeframe is October 12-22 (11 days) which includes the competition, hotel, food, and tour afterwards. You can also choose 16 day or 23 day options, which will have more extensive tours. Otherwise there are also options to arrange portions of the trip by yourself even the rooms, flights, etc. The price for the 11 day package starts at $1785 for the land portion (double occupancy in the room), plus flight, and increases if you want a longer tour or single occupancy. The competitors' fees will be subsidized by the sponsors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much experience do I need in order to compete?
You do not need to have experience competing, but should have completed your second form by now. However there is a beginner's category for kids who only know Wu Bu Quan, in fact there were several 5 year olds in that category in our last trip to Hong Kong. We are waiting to hear whether there is a similar category in China.

What is the difference between the two competitions?
Aside from the time of year, the competitions are created by different organizations. The one in Hong Kong is for several disciplines including Traditional Kung Fu, Wushu, Tai Chi, etc. The one in China is only for Traditional Kung Fu. There are 8 platforms/areas concurrently being used at the Hong Kong competition, and 4 at the one in China, so the venue will be bigger in Hong Kong but it's because they also have more disciplines. Also there may be several competitors concurrently doing their forms on one platform in Hong Kong, in China there is usually only one competitor per platform for most categories.

How many people am I competing against?
It will depend on how many sign up in your category. Each category is divided by style, age, gender, so if you happen to be in a popular category you could be competing against a dozen or more. If you are in a smaller category there may be only a couple.

Am I too old or young to join?
There is no age limit as youngest we have had are around 5 years old, and the oldest adults are in their 70's, but feel free to contact me about your particular situation.

When is the deadline to sign up?
The deadline to sign up for the China competition as part of the team is March 31, 2026, and you will also need to make a non-refundable $500 deposit. You can still join after that date but you would not be part of the fundraising, marketing, etc. The deadline to sign up for the Hong Kong competition is May 15, 2026, however you should decide soon due to the amount of planning and preparation which has already started.

How much will it cost?
As the Hong Kong trip is mostly self-planned your cost depends on the flight you want to arrange, what you will do afterwards, etc. The hotel group rates are 750RMB/night for a double occupancy or 1000RMB/night for triple occupancy, plus 13% taxes and fees, unless you are choosing your own hotel so again the cost would depend on what you pick. With the trip to China there are limited flights at the group rate $1850 for only Oct 12-27 but otherwise the flight prices are vastly different outside of the group travel dates as prices have increased since the travel agent blocked off seats for the team. For the land portion there is an 11 day option for $1785/person based on double occupancy, a 16 day option for $2550/person, or a 23 day option for $4285/person. It would be more for one person occupying a room. You could also choose just the barebones 6 days in Dengfeng hotel only for $585/person, but you would have to arrange everything else yourself even travel from airport to Dengfeng etc.
